Daytime television has been hit with another loss, as the family of beloved General Hospital and Ryan’s Hope actor Ron Hale announced that he passed away on August 27 at the age of 78. An official obituary was published by Bryant Funeral Home, Inc., located in St. George, SC.
The General Hospital team shared their condolences, stating:
“The entire General Hospital family is saddened to hear of Ron Hale’s passing. We extend our condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time. He was an incredible actor and an unforgettable colleague. May he rest in peace.”
Hale’s first role came in 1968 on NYPD before making his daytime debut in Search for Tomorrow a year later as Walt Driscoll. He also appeared in two stints on Love Is a Many Splendored Thing as Dr. Jim Abbott. However, it was his role as Dr. Roger Coleridge on Ryan’s Hope in 1975 that cemented his legacy, a role he played until 1989.
Ryan’s Hope leading lady Louise Shaffer, whose Ray Woodard shared scenes with Roger, remembered Hale fondly:
“Ron was the man with the wicked grin and twinkle in his eye—one of the kindest people I’ve known. One of my first scenes with him was a love scene. Those were tough; you had to keep your sheets strategically placed while avoiding awkward camera angles. In the cold studio, Ron made it bearable. As the stage manager counted us down, Ron cracked a joke, and we both laughed—it was the perfect icebreaker. My hero. Rest in peace, Ron.”
Following his long run on Ryan’s Hope, Hale went on to play Sonny’s father, Mike Corbin, on General Hospital from 1995 to 2010, even crossing over to Port Charles. His prime-time appearances included Matlock, Murder, She Wrote, Trial by Jury, and more.
In 2017, he appeared alongside Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) as Father Reinhard in The Ghost and the Whale, which tells the story of Joseph, a man who fights to clear his name after returning from sea without the love of his life.
Rest in peace, Ron Hale.
