From physical illnesses to deeply personal battles with mental health, her journey has been a powerful story of resilience, courage, and healing. Early Health Struggles and Career Interruptions Storms’ first major hiatus came in 2011, when she took a 10-month break from General Hospital due to medical complications. In 2012, she had to step away again after being diagnosed with endometriosis, a painful condition that affects the uterus. At the time, fans hoped her absence would be brief, but it was clear that Storms needed time to heal both physically and emotionally. Then in 2016, life dealt her another personal blow. Kirsten and her husband, fellow soap actor Brandon Barash, announced their divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Despite the heartbreak, the couple remained committed to co-parenting their daughter Harper Rose, always putting her well-being first. Admirers praised both actors for their maturity and dedication during such a challenging period. Anxiety, Depression, and Misunderstanding Unfortunately, Storms’ struggles didn’t end there. That same year, she once again took time off from GH, this time due to a skin condition linked to anxiety. Her appearance changed dramatically due to weight loss, sparking intense speculation. Some fans, lacking information, feared she was battling substance abuse or even cancer. These rumors only added to the burden she was already carrying. In a candid 2017 interview with Soap Opera Digest, Storms opened up about her severe depression and how it consumed her life. “I wasn’t taking care of myself,” she revealed. “I wasn’t eating. I was ignoring me and focusing on things in my head that were negative constantly, and it consumed me.” It was a moment of vulnerability and honesty that helped many fans understand the reality behind her absence. Brain Surgery and a Scary Diagnosis As Storms began to prioritize her mental health, she was hit with another terrifying challenge. In June 2021, she shocked fans by revealing she had undergone brain surgery. Wearing a neck brace, she appeared on Instagram to explain what had happened. “I had brain surgery… less than 48 hours ago,” she disclosed. “It was on the lower portion of my brain.” She clarified that it was not cancer but a massive brain cyst that had split into two. The cyst had created enough pressure in her skull to warrant immediate surgery. Storms confessed that she had ignored symptoms for a long time, thinking they were side effects of medication or just signs of aging. A routine MRI, ordered by a concerned doctor, revealed the true source of her problems. “I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it,” she said. Though understandably nervous about the surgery, she was overwhelmed with gratitude for her family, friends, and GH castmates who supported her through the ordeal. Battling COVID and More Health Challenges Just months later in December 2021, Storms once again faced a health crisis when she tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated. Initially mistaking her symptoms for bronchitis, she sought urgent care and was quickly diagnosed. The pain was so severe, she later admitted that she feared she might die.
