Daniel Goddard opens up about being UNFAIRLY FIRED from Y&R
Daniel Goddard Reveals Why He Chose General Hospital Over a Y&R Return
After nearly six years away from daytime television, fan-favorite Daniel Goddard is back—but not where fans expected him.
Best known for his long-running role as Cane Ashby on The Young and the Restless, Daniel Goddard recently made his soap opera comeback on General Hospital as the mysterious Professor Dalton. While many viewers hoped to see him return to Genoa City, Goddard surprised fans by joining the cast of GH, marking a fresh chapter in his career.
In a candid interview with Woman’s World, the Australian actor opened up about his decision and the emotional rollercoaster that came with it.
“After more than a decade on Y&R, returning to auditioning made me question everything,” Goddard admitted.
He revealed that he initially auditioned for the role of Jack Brennan, a part that eventually went to fellow Y&R alum Chris McKenna. The experience triggered a wave of self-doubt, especially after not auditioning for four years.
“It felt like those 12 years amounted to nothing,” he said, referencing the uncertainty he felt re-entering the industry.
Despite the discouragement, Goddard gave the audition his all. While he didn’t land the Brennan role, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini saw something unique in him—so much so that it led to the creation of a brand-new character: Professor Dalton.
“I’ve never received a direct offer for anything before,” Goddard revealed. “Every role I’ve ever had came from grinding and hustle.”
His return to daytime television feels like a second chance, he says—one he’s not taking for granted. However, there are noticeable differences between his old soap home and his new one. On Y&R, actors typically receive full scripts and can see weeks ahead in the storyline. At GH, however, actors only receive the scenes they’re involved in, adding an extra layer of suspense—even for the cast.
“There’s less control, more mystery,” Goddard noted. “It’s something I’m still getting used to.”
Fortunately, he’s found familiar faces on set to help with the transition. Goddard has already reunited with Genie Francis and Tristan Rogers, who previously played his on-screen parents during his Y&R tenure.
As for his new role as Professor Dalton, much about the character remains under wraps—even to Goddard himself. But he’s intrigued by the possibilities, especially the potential for darker, more complex storylines.
“There’s definitely room for something dramatic and even villainous,” he teased.
Goddard’s return follows a string of notable departures from Y&R, including Rory Gibson. With long-time viewers nostalgic for the show’s golden days, his move to GH marks a shift in the soap landscape.
Fans can only wait to see what twists lie ahead for Professor Dalton. One thing’s for sure—Daniel Goddard is back, and he’s just getting started.
