The Young and the Restless

Y&R Family Mourns the Loss of Beloved Colleague

The Young and the Restless family has lost another precious member.
Tom McDermott, a member of the show’s directing team, has sadly passed away.
Stay tuned to know more.

Hey everyone, welcome to Trend Street.

The Young and the Restless family recently said goodbye to one of their own — Tom McDermott, who passed away in March 2025.
And Tom wasn’t just another name in the credits — he was a backstage legend who spent over 40 years helping shape the magic we see on our screens.

Whether you noticed his name or not, trust us — Y&R’s look wouldn’t have been the same without him.

The April 8th episode of Y&R even ended with a touching tribute card in Tom’s honor.
It was the perfect nod to someone who gave so much of himself to the show.

As a longtime stage manager, he knew the ins and outs of TV production like the back of his hand.
Tom officially became a full-time stage manager for The Young and the Restless back in 2002.

Since then, his behind-the-scenes brilliance played a huge part in the show snagging Daytime Emmy Awards in both 2011 and 2019 — not to mention all those other Emmy and Directors Guild nominations the team racked up.

Tom joined the Directors Guild of America in 1984 and quickly became a powerhouse in the organization.
He held leadership roles on both the Western and Eastern AD/SM/PA councils, and served as council chair from 2015 to 2017.

He even sat on the national board as an associate member from 2017 to 2019.
In 2016, his hard work and influence were officially recognized when he was honored with the Franklin J. Schaner Achievement Award —
which is a pretty big deal in the TV world.

But Y&R was just one chapter of his epic career.
Before settling into Genoa City, Tom worked on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, The Today Show, and even The Late Show with David Letterman.

And it doesn’t stop there — he was also part of major events like the Super Bowl, the Olympics, and the NBA Finals.
They sure were high-profile roles he had.

But beyond all the wins and big-name projects, what made Tom special was his heart.
He was a true mentor — always lifting others up and sharing his knowledge with the next wave of stage managers and production hopefuls.

His colleagues also said that he was the kind of guy who never hesitated to offer help or advice, no matter how busy he was.

Y&R will definitely feel a bit empty behind the scenes now.
So let’s all send our heartfelt condolences to the cast and crew of Y&R,
as well as Tom McDermott’s family and loved ones during this hallenging time.
